64Fifty | An Exhibition by Koffii
For Jamie Coyle (aka Koffii) painting always starts with drawing, switching his brain off and allowing things to come to the page organically. Never liking the idea of forced narratives, and outside of overall themes, Jamie likes to focus on the design and structure of a painting to guide his decisions. Using the rambled mess of a sketchbook page sparks the excitement for his next idea.
Jamie has always thought every idea has a certain size to it. Some ideas are small, only warranting a small amount of attention. Others grow into something much bigger. Part of the fun of all this is working out how big an idea wants to be and doing everything he can to meet its expectations.
With 64Fifty, Jamie wanted to push himself, using Kepa Kurl Esperance and the beauty of the ocean as its backdrop for the weirdness that gets overlooked. Sitting somewhere between cartoonish realism and surrealism, he hopes people enjoy looking at his work as much as he enjoys making it.
