Macrame has become a fun new creative way to decorate your home or room so jump onboard the macrame train and create a garland with Bonnie Wilson. A primary school teacher by trade, Bonnie loves crafting and enjoys decorating her home with her macrame pieces. In this workshop explore the square knot and the double half hitch knot. If you’ve never created macrame before, this will be a great way to have a go and enjoy making a wonderful garland that you can take home for your room.

KickArts: DIY Denim Painting

Let your child's creativity shine in this exciting workshop where they get to hand-paint their very own denim jacket or denim jeans! There are no limits to their imagination as they explore the world of acrylic paint on fabric. Each child will have the opportunity to transform their chosen denim piece into a wearable work of art that's uniquely their own. Run by artist and earring entrepreneur, Brittany Norton of Bye, See You, children must supply their own clothing. Items ideally will be dropped off the week prior to the workshop to do a bit of prep to the fabric. Each item must clearly be labeled on the inside with the child’s name. One piece per child. Items will be wearable and will last with care and gentle washing.

All other materials are provided. Participants should wear clothes suitable for crafting, and must wear closed in shoes and tie up long hair. Recommended to send them with a labelled water bottle.

KickArts: Spooky LEGO Tales

Prepare for a spooktacular Halloween adventure combining creativity, storytelling, and LEGO building! In this workshop, participants will randomly select a Halloween LEGO minifigure and it will be up to them to create its personality, describing its unique abilities, and personality traits, and especially giving it a name. Guided by teacher Steven Wombell, who has a passion for LEGO and writing, participants will bring their character to life using LEGO bricks! With a wide variety of LEGO pieces at their disposal to construct a setting for their character and start developing a storyline for the character. We will take a photo of each child's spooky masterpiece. These photos will be printed and paired with the character profile page, creating a personalised keepsake for each participant. As a bonus, each child will get to keep their LEGO minifigure. Thank you to ESCARE for loaning us their LEGO for the setting construction.

KickArts: Weaving a Tzicuri

A Tzicuri (God’s eye) is a Mexican charm of good luck and protection, woven onto crisscrossing sticks joining in the centre. Jimena Ramon Montemayor is a Mexican marine biologist living in Esperance and she loves sharing her passion about the ocean and her culture. Jimena will guide participants to weave their chosen yarns to create the tzicuri, a hanging decorative object that they can take home at the end of the workshop. They may even get to make more than one!

All materials are provided. Participants should wear clothes suitable for crafting, and must wear closed in shoes. Recommended to send them with a labelled water bottle.

FLOWER EMBROIDERY FOR BEGINNERS

Try your hand at embroidery for a relaxing Sunday afternoon. Learn some basic embroidery stitches to create delicate flowers with artist Rani Fankha. Being formally trained as a fashion designer and driven by a passion for Japanese pop culture and lifestyle, she started creating her own art early on in her life. She interweaves the two disciplines in a seamless way, adding another dimension to her art by translating the aesthetics of her drawings into wearable but unique textiles.

You will start out on a test patch and then move on to customising your own garment, a shirt, hat, pants, jacket, or even just a plain tea towel. All other materials are provided, including a hoop which is yours to keep, and the urn will be on with tea, coffee, and biscuits.

As requested by adults, after the success of her weaving workshop in the KickArts children's program, we have an adults only weaving! Join Ally Tas for a relaxing Tuesday evening to create a woven wall hanging. Using a loom and a variety of yarns, fabrics and roving, Ally will teach you the basics of weaving and then you can create and play, warp and weft away to create your textile artwork.

Not making time to create art? Schedule this time for yourself and join like minded individuals to focus on your art for 2 hours in the Print Room at the Cannery Arts Centre. The Print Room is a multi-purpose studio space for drawing, painting, printmaking, needlework or other creative pursuits. No pottery sorry due to drainage.

BYO materials and equipment. *Print Club Members come along to these sessions as well but pay a separate fee to use the printing equipment-go to the workshop Print Club for more information.

Six sessions are available per term on Wednesday evenings, 6 pm-8 pm from 2 August - 6 September. Come for one session or come for them all. Pick and choose when you come.

Felt Native Animals

Create Felt Native Animals and learn language with artist in residence Yabini Kickett, an artist with ties to Ballardong, Nyaki-Nyaki, Wadjuk people of the Bibulmun Nation. Choose from an assortment of coloured felt and yarn, children use blunt wool needles and glue, and filling their bodies to make three dimensional native animals.

Parents/guardians are invited to stay to assist their child but can leave their child. All KickArts tutors have Working With Children Checks and tutors work with small groups of children.

Learn to knit with accomplished knitter Nikki Starr. Over 4 sessions you will learn ‘how to knit’ basics including; the knit stitch, pearl stitch, methods for casting on and binding off as well as the modern approach to knitting on circular needles. By the end of the course you will have the skills to embark on your first simple pattern and a host of links and resources to help you on your way. Course materials are provided and include; circular needles, essential knitting notions and a ball of yarn. Small group.
