Mexican Alebrijes with Ocean Plastic

  • Cannery Arts Centre 1018 Norseman Road CHADWICK Australia (map)

Turn waste into art! Working with Jimena, Enviro-Experiences Project Officer from Southcoast NRM, a marine biologist born in Mexico, the children will walk to the beach opposite the Cannery Arts Centre and collect washed-up plastics. They will then use this plastic and clay to create creatures called Alebrijes, Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures. Jimena has a background in science and marine conservation. She is passionate about spreading her love for the oceans and promoting ways to protect them, and creating opportunities to engage people with the environment. All materials are provided. If participants want to make them brightly coloured like they are in Mexico, they must paint them at home.

Participants should wear clothes suitable for beach collecting and clay work, and we suggest providing them with a labelled water bottle.
