Open Borders: [IN]SITE

  • Cannery Arts Centre Norseman Road Esperance, WA, 6450 Australia (map)

Set to open on Thursday 29th September from 5:30 pm, join artists and collaborators on the night alongside accompanying soundscapes from local musicians Campbell Garratt and Kyron Smithson. Curators Sarsby Martin and Marcia Leonard will share some light-hearted reflections on their time spent throughout the development process with the artists for this exciting and thought-provoking exhibition. We look forward to seeing you there.

The theme "Open Borders" explores the burden and blessing of demarcation. Inspired by Western Australia's unique experience of containment during the Covid-19 pandemic, "Open Borders", the theme has prompted state-wide reflection (across all nine of WA's regions and metro Perth) upon the role of borders and their impact on our lives. With the assistance of Fiona Sinclair from Southern Forest Arts, mentors and mentees have been encouraged to broaden their curatorial experience and shed light on the critical details that can go amiss during the pre-production of an exhibition. Artists Lynda Horn, Jamie Coyle, Katie White, Jenelle Griffiths, Natalie McCarthy and Allira Henderson have been asked by local curators and artists to deconstruct the theme and, with collaboration, have produced multi-disciplinary work and installations. The final pieces are firmly influenced by location, the psychological repercussions, and visceral thought patterns surrounding the exhibition's theme.

Join us again towards the end of the exhibit for an artist talk. Community members will have the chance to revisit the work, ask artists involved questions about their practice, and gain further insight into the exhibition. Date to be confirmed.

This exhibition has been made possible thanks to Southern Forest Arts, the Creative Grid, John Curtin Gallery, Regional Arts Network, Regional Arts WA, Regional Arts Fund and the Shire of Esperance.
