Curate-a-Wall: Rani Fankha & Sarsby Martin

  • Cannery Arts Centre Norseman Road Esperance, WA, 6450 Australia (map)

Curate-a-Wall is a multidisciplinary space where artists can curate their work on the walls of the Jetty Gallery located at the front of the Cannery Arts Centre in Kepa Kurl / Esperance on Wudjari boodja. A new initiative, this platform offers artists the opportunity to display a small exhibit of new/old work for visitors to the Cannery to enjoy and purchase.

This time we have invited local artists Sarsby Martin and Rani Fankha to get involved. Rani has chosen to exhibit a selection of drawings and mixed media pieces titled ‘I wish I were a duck’. Sarsby has complimented this with her own illustrative mixed media paintings including her first instalment of the new project ‘Social Graces’.

Rani Fankha is a Swiss Sri Lankan Artist. After growing up in Switzerland, she studied and lived in Japan and New Zealand before she recently moved to Esperance with her partner and daughter. Being formally trained as a fashion designer and driven by a passion for Japanese pop culture and lifestyle, she started creating her own art early on in her life. She interweaves the two disciplines in a seamless way, adding another dimension to her art by translating the aesthetics of her drawings into wearable but unique textiles. Drawing from her versatile cultural background she is interested in different ways the vulnerability of human emotions can be expressed and in finding out to what extent our emotions are individual or political.

Sarsby Martin is a multidisciplinary artist, photographer, and marketing officer for the Cannery Arts Centre. They're based in the small seaside rural town of Esperance, Western Australia and venture up north, freelancing their practices and collaborating with like-minded clientele, artists and friends. Sarsby enjoys experimenting and challenging the many malleable forms of creative writing, painting and photography, including public art and producing.

Come down to the Cannery to view this display of incredible work. Sarsby has set themselves up in the space with working materials and is happy to answer any questions regarding the display and commissions. For more info please reach out to Katie via katie@canneryarts.com.au.
