The Gallery was first developed in 1984 to accommodate local and touring exhibitions and provide space for visual arts workshops and events. In 1986, construction of 4 studio spaces adjacent to the main building lead to the decline of the Gallery as a working space. An integral part of the Gallery complex is the centre flat, which provides self-contained accommodation for an artist or arts personnel visiting Esperance. The gallery has a (B) Category classification. The space has controlled lighting and a stable relative temperature in a secure brick building with timber floor. Currently the Gallery is without temperature/humidity control. All external entries are bolted and deadlocked. All external windows are fitted with security screens and a monitored alarm system is installed.

The space is lit by track mounted wall washes and aureole track mounted beam spots and has UV screening on skylights and south facing gable window at 3m from floor.

Hanging space

54 running metres with timber hanging rail to suit hooks accommodating stainless steel rope and Arcus Super Clamps.  The Gallery provides numerous display boxes of various dimensions.

  • 1 week $250
  • 2 weeks $400 
  • 3 weeks $525 
  • 4 weeks $600 
  • Additional weeks after 4 weeks: $100/week    
  • Additional days after one week: $35/day

Possible additional fees: 

  • Exhibition lighting fee - $105 one off fee.  This fee is essential for those who have no experience with track lighting systems.  This ensures personal safety and limits possible damages to the Cannery Arts Centre’s lighting system. 
  • Exhibition opening fees - varies.  Exhibition opening fees are largely established based on the preferences of the hiree.  Assessed on a case by case basis.
  • Installation fees - $35/hr as required to assist with installation.   

Booking terms & fees

  • All prices include GST and are only open to Cannery Arts Centre members
  • Minimum booking of 3 days per exhibition
  • 15% commission on sales
  • 50% deposit must be made at time of booking
  • Lost keys will induce a $77 replacement fee
  • Cannery staff available for four days per week  (Tuesdays to Fridays 10am to 4pm) and volunteer gallery sitters where available on weekends (Saturdays & Sundays 12-4pm).  
  • All hires are subject to availability.
  • All exhibition hires require the approval of the committee. 
  • Any hiree holding a private event, or a group event, must be a financial member of the Cannery Arts Centre for insurance purposes.  Individual adult memberships - $50 per year, organisational memberships - $160 per year. 
  • Any hiree utilising a space for the purpose of private enterprise must provide the Cannery Arts Centre with a certificate of currency of public liability insurance prior to the hire.
  • All spaces must be left in the general condition in which they were found.  Hirees are expected the sweep floors, wipe countertops, clean any dishes used, and ensure all bins are emptied.  Any spaces requiring additional cleaning post hire will incur a $35/hr cleaning fee.
  • Hire fees may be negotiable, specifically if the hire is related to an event or activity that aligns with the objectives of the Cannery Arts Centre, in particular events which ‘foster, promote and encourage arts and crafts activities within the Shire of Esperance.’
