9x5 Biennial Exhibition and Auction

About the event

The 9x5 Auction was inspired by the Heidelberg School of Artists based in Melbourne. The first Auction was held in 1889. Cigar boxes measuring 9x5inches were used as canvases and were painted by some of Australia’s best known impressionist artists; Tom Roberts, Frederick McCubbin and Arthur Streeton were amongst these Heidelberg artists.

Inspired by this rich Australian art history, the Cannery has been hosting our main fundraiser- the 9x5 Exhibition and Art Auction for over 25 years. This biennial event raises much-needed funds to keep the Cannery Arts Centre open.

This is where our local artists come in:

The Cannery provides the 9x5inch boards and artists apply their talent and donate a work of art to the Cannery for auction. Over the past twenty-five years we have seen some amazing artworks created by mostly local artists but also gifts from State, National and International artists.

Boards are limited to two per person and can be picked up now.  Finished works need to be returned to the Cannery by Friday 5th November . The design is only limited by imagination!

Artists will receive a tax deductible receipt for the value that their work is sold at auction.

Works will then be exhibited and open to the public from the 12th November.

Bidders may register and receive a bidding number to enable them to place silent bids up until auction day where silent bids will close prior to the auction.

Auction day is Sunday 5th December 2021 @ 330PM.

Auction day will see all works go under hammer by a professional auctioneer. Registered bidders will then have the opportunity to bid, above that of the highest silent bid.

The 9x5 Auction is a fabulous opportunity to obtain awesome works of art and at the same time the donation to the Cannery enables us to provide a valuable arts program for the community.
